A Rocky Mountain National Park Adventure with Liz & Ben

Quick friends and outdoor enthusiasts, Liz and been decided to adventure to Colorado to celebrate Ben’s 30th birthday. After months of planning his birthday and after a surprise engagement, Liz thought it would be full of amazingness to take their engagement photos in Colorado. By some happenstance, a little bit of faith, and Instagram, we found each other. After we decided we were a match made in heaven, I thought it would be fun to be a tour guide and take Liz & Ben to the beloved Rocky Mountain National Park. This sweet engagement was so much more than an experience… it was an unforgettable adventure!

How They Met

In the summer of 2013, Liz & Ben at a bar through a mutual friend. Ben was living in Oklahoma at the time and home visiting for the summer (he’s a teacher). They had a lot in common and hit it off instantly. They talked all night, exchanged numbers and developed a quick friendship. Over the next month they would talk everyday and try to hang out as often as possible. A week before Ben was heading back to Oklahoma, they decided to try the long distance thing and officially date!

The Proposal

Ben: “I picked out the ring a few months before I actually proposed. I had a few ideas of places to propose and narrowed it down to the location we went for our first date, a waterfall. I figured it would be best to wait until June when I knew the weather would be just right. When Liz randomly said we should go to the waterfall in the middle of May, I jumped at the opportunity since it would be her idea. I was hoping this would decrease any suspicion of a proposal since this was her idea. It was a Thursday so after school I stopped at the store to pick up sunflowers, champagne, fruit and chocolate to bring on the adventure. when I got home I discreetly packed everything into a backpack and claimed it was just extra things for our dog, Bruno, who we were bringing to the waterfall with us. Once we arrived, I quickly grabbed the backpack and we made our way towards the top of the waterfall. As we got closer I kept repeating a speech in my head and tried to calm my nerves. When we got to the top we stopped at a rock to take in the views. while standing at the edge of the waterfall I took Liz's hands and asked her to spend her life with me. She of course said yes and we celebrated with champagne! Afterwards, we headed into town and sat by the lake to eat ice cream and watch the sunset. Everything came together beautifully and I couldn't have been happier.”

Liz: “It was a beautiful night and we had plans to go to ‘our place’: the waterfall, where we had our first date to have some drinks and relax outside as we do every year. It was my idea to go and as I rushed in the house to change Ben was all packed and ready to go. We got in the car with Bruno in tow and headed to Carpenter Falls. We arrived, grabbed our stuff and headed to the top of the falls. When we got to the top, we stood on a rock overlooking the falls. Ben grabbed my hand and began to say the sweetest things about how I make him happy and how he knew I was special from the first time we had come to this waterfall. My heart began to race as I thought this might be the moment.... Then he got down on one knee, at our place and asked me to marry him! I was overwhelmed with joy and excitement and couldn't stop looking at the beautiful ring. We celebrated with some champagne and then headed back into town to watch the sunset. It was the best day of my life thus far!”

Best Advice They’ve Ever Received About Marriage…

“On the night we got engaged we were sitting by the lake and asked an older couple if they could take our picture since we had just gotten engaged. They were so sweet and they told us they’d been married for 50 years. I asked they woman what the secret was and she told us, ‘It’s never 50/50. It's about being there for each other 100% of the time. If he’s having a bad day and only at ‘30’ its your job to be that other ‘70" percent.’”
